Last year's 'Have A Heart for Polio - 2008' Drive a resounding success!

The evening began Saturday, February 14 with social hour at 5:30 pm, a gourmet meal at 6:00 complete with dessert, and a complementary glass of wine and serenades for the sweethearts. The 7:00 p.m. program featured Kris Meyer, motivational storyteller, followed by musical entertainment from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Proceeds from the evening are pledged by Mason City Noon Rotary to help Rotary International raise $100 million dollars to match the Gates Foundation's $255 million challenge grant given to support Rotary's initiative to Eradicate Polio World Wide.

When Rotary joined the coalition to eradicate polio in 1988, the goal was to remove polio permanently so that surveillance screening and control measures such as vaccines would no longer be needed. Although world wide efforts to distribute a vaccine reduced polio by 99 percent, young people are still effected. Current eradication efforts are focused in the four remaining countries where polio is epidemic: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. But the strategy to monitor the disease and provide access to immunization is global, with the ultimate goal of eradication.
