“We are extremely pleased with the results of the literacy project that we are involved in with Rotary. Our elementary students very much enjoy their Rotary Reader friends who read to and with them on a regular basis. Rotarians are making a difference not only by helping our students become more proficient readers but also by offering their friendship and support. This program is a wonderful example of a school community partnership that we only hope will expand each year to reach additional students!”

Rotarians read to elementary students in the Mason City Community Schools as part of the Mason City Noon Rotary Club's Literacy Project.
The goal of the Rotary Reads Program is to give individual students or groups of students the opportunity on a scheduled basis, to read to an adult and to listen to an adult read. The program provides students with support, beyond daily reading instruction, to work on increasing reading skills, fluency and comprehension.
"We are thrilled with the enthusiasm that our reading partnership has created with our elementary readers and teachers. Our Rotary Readers share a love for reading and enjoy helping students become better readers and learn that reading is fun." stated Margo Underwood, Rotary Reads Program Committee Chair.
Reading aloud to children encourages them to read on their own, helps them become better readers, better listeners, and better students.
And - most importantly - Rotarians help children learn that reading is fun!
***NOTE*** The Literacy Resource Group connects Rotarians with the information and tools they need to actively promote literacy at home and abroad. It asks Rotary clubs to learn about literacy and education issues in their communities and help increase access to quality learning opportunities for those in need. Clubs are also encouraged to work with the International Reading Association to conduct literacy projects worldwide.
