“The edge has to be straight and the base has to be level and
horizontal,” he said. “The angle is based on the latitude of Clear Lake,
43 degrees 9 minutes, which makes the gnomon parallel to the pole of the earth
and the time is based on Central Standard Time,” Duesenberg described.
Laurence Fredriksen of Fredriksen Welding and Mike Connor
did the execution of the butterfly design in wrought iron with J.B. Barnhouse
of Country Stone Masons, carving the Iowa
limestone base. Julie and Bruce Steinberg of North Iowa Collision donated the refinish
painting.
The sundial was
made possible by major donations from Mason City Sunrise Rotary Club, Mason
City Noon Rotary Club and from individual Rotary members, former employers and
friends of Bill Killpack. Killpack was a past President of the Mason City Noon
Rotary and District Governor of 5970 Rotary. He had over thirty years of
perfect attendance at Rotary. He loved Central Gardens
of North Iowa so much that he served on the
fundraising committee up until the time of his death. Area Rotary Clubs have
helped in creating many of the unique features in Central Gardens,
which will be enjoyed for generations to come.
